Art and science are two fundamental pillars of our societies. My personal project is to find ways to combine both and, with that, access many of the most complex issues of our times. I don't do it alone — I collaborate with many brilliant scientists, artists and collaborators, creating exciting projects. I consider myself a man of many talents but most importantly, an explorer in a journey that often takes me into uncharted territories.
L'arte e la scienza sono due pilastri fondamentali delle nostre società. Il mio progetto personale è quello di trovare il modo di combinarle entrambe e, così facendo, accedere a molte delle questioni più complesse del nostro tempo. Non lo faccio da solo — collaboro con molti scienziati brillanti, artisti e collaboratori, creando con loro progetti entusiasmanti. Mi considero un uomo dai molti talenti, ma soprattutto un esploratore in viaggio che spesso mi porta in territori inesplorati.

For more than two decades my home has been the stage, but my approach is still that of a physicist: I am curious, I am bold, and I love exploring. As a theatre director and playwright, I have built a body of work that lives at the meeting point of art and scientific inquiry — directing Compagnia Arditodesìo (since 2002), the Teatro della Meraviglia festival (since 2017), and shaping the Augmented Lectures format with researchers across Europe. I think of this work as a research practice in its own right: science-theatre — neither science with theatrical decoration nor theatre about science from the outside, but a way of investigating ideas through the body, the voice, and the audience.
My theatre training came from the three-year SAT — School After Theatre advanced programme, led by the Russian director and pedagogue Jurij Alschitz and affiliated with EATC and the Russian Academy of Theatre Arts (GITIS) in Moscow.
The path to the stage began in physics — a BA from Cornell, a PhD from Stony Brook University, and research on Bose–Einstein condensates published in Physical Review Letters. That research chapter closed in the early 2000s. What remains is the way of thinking — and a deep love and respect for scientific research — which now lives inside the theatre work rather than alongside it.
I sit on the board of directors of EUSEA — the European Science Engagement Association — and on the scientific committee of the Theatre About Science International Conference (Coimbra). I teach storytelling and science communication at the universities of Trento, Bologna, and Milano-Bicocca. With Associazione Portland I co-founded and directed Teatro Portland (2004–2025). In 2025 I wrote the foreword to Leonardo Colletti's Onde di Materia (Edizioni Dedalo).
Da oltre vent'anni la mia casa è il palcoscenico, ma il mio approccio è ancora quello di un fisico: sono curioso, audace, e amo esplorare. Come regista e drammaturgo ho costruito un corpus di lavoro che vive nell'incontro tra arte e indagine scientifica — dirigendo la Compagnia Arditodesìo (dal 2002), il festival Teatro della Meraviglia (dal 2017) e sviluppando il format delle Augmented Lectures con ricercatrici e ricercatori in tutta Europa. Considero questo lavoro una pratica di ricerca a tutti gli effetti: teatroscienza — non scienza con decorazione teatrale, né teatro sulla scienza visto da fuori, ma un modo di indagare le idee attraverso il corpo, la voce, il pubblico.
La mia formazione teatrale viene dal triennio SAT — School After Theatre, condotto dal regista e pedagogo russo Jurij Alschitz e parificato con EATC e l'Accademia Russa di Arti Teatrali (GITIS) di Mosca.
Il percorso verso il palcoscenico è nato dalla fisica — bachelor a Cornell, dottorato alla Stony Brook University e ricerche sui condensati di Bose–Einstein pubblicate su Physical Review Letters. Quel capitolo di ricerca si è chiuso nei primi anni 2000. Ciò che resta è il modo di pensare — e un profondo amore e rispetto per la ricerca scientifica — che oggi vive dentro il lavoro teatrale anziché accanto ad esso.
Siedo nel consiglio direttivo di EUSEA — European Science Engagement Association — e nel comitato scientifico della Theatre About Science International Conference (Coimbra). Insegno storytelling e comunicazione della scienza alle università di Trento, Bologna e Milano-Bicocca. Con l'Associazione Portland ho co-fondato e diretto il Teatro Portland (2004–2025). Nel 2025 ho firmato la prefazione a Onde di Materia di Leonardo Colletti (Edizioni Dedalo).
